Memoir on My Career 2020, By Drogo Empedocles

I am defined socially by my supporters, more than if i were isolated and alone (obviously). Thank you for your support of my life’s work! Is my art and writing my career? I suppose it is, but not if careers must be defined purely by financial profit.

It is strange because my favorite parts of my education did not translate into making money in regular jobs, but i was not as prepared for regular jobs because of my own interests, which meant i cant really blame my art school because i didnt want the regular jobs it turns out. some of us need to spend fortunes to find that out, but trying to make the fortune back by working at regular jobs was the only real way to know whether or not there is a place there for me in conventional business. I like writing and art because I dont need a boss to do them. i still try to make money by selling my work to clients and pleasing patrons; but there is a big difference doing what i love my own way, and people supporting me as a friend, for favors that friends do. I always felt like having a boss meant i was doing work that i needed someone else to tell me how to do, so it was not really a job i would want, unless i was able to be the boss soon or the boss was my best friend. Only when my boss was friendly was a regular job even tolerable for me. Many people feel like they do not have a choice, and for many who just want to do what they are told for a paycheck or who need to provide for dependents maybe that is true; but i feel that if we want to be free, nothing can stop us from eventually quitting jobs that do not fit.

I have heard that being an adult means getting a regular job, to pay regular bills. In fact i always thought that would just happen naturally as an adult, that all my hard work in school would just translate to having the long lost career of my father’s generation. I have also heard that those pensions and life-long salaries are gone (although i still apply to the few that exist), and I know that technology has changed how work gets done, from even the ways I was taught with pencil and paper. I think this Covid Crisis is forcing society to change even more, towards the European socialist model, where a responsible civilization has a government that is by and for the people, and does not just use citizens to extract public resources for the rich. I mean, corporations still will do that, but adults will have a right to life, even if they are not enough of a competitive servant and smart enough to want to take more money from others than they need, simply because they ‘worked hard’ doing what someone else thought they should do.

When someone says “if adults can’t make enough money as an artist, they should get a real job.” I imagine cutting their head off, and sending it to our magical boss; you know the one who would want an employee like me. I would get a gold star and a raise for sure.

Trumpian Economic Report 2020

Artisan Vs. Commercial Market Selling

By Drogo Empedocles – January 2020

In a Trumpian economy most of us are forced to be beggars even when we offer work in return for money, due to an excess of labor not needed or desired by the rich. Trickle-down Reaganomics has failed us, and is still being pushed on us by Trump and all corporate politicians who sold out. We must resist falling to the attacks causing the destruction of our lives and plan to not just survive but rebuild a better world for our children.

Trump’s tax plan benefits the rich, and diminishes the middle class. The estate tax is gone now so that rich children can inherit all their parent’s wealth freely without earning it, while poor children suffer without deserving it. Personal exemptions have been removed. You can still itemize donations, but the standard deduction bar was raised with an overall .5% tax rate reduction. Those basic changes might negligibly benefit lower incomes, but average to upper middle class households are losing thousands on whole due to other changes in the tax plan.

I lost some financial support despite my working through the holidays on several projects. I won’t be able to do as much free or low-budget work with others, until i can secure more income to cover my own expenses at least. my income is only $700 a year recently, so i feel like i get by with quite a little actually. I only currently use one sound program most weeks, and focus on word (writing) programs, which have glitches between formats, but i am able to publish that way. So for over a year i have only been using two editing programs.

Most people should know that any work has a price; and so my work is for sale, as with any artist; we need means to live so we try to sell prints and originals if we can. If people do not know how to want to share money with others, i am not sure how i can help them except to remind them by bringing it up sometimes. I focus on my work more than sales, because i do it for the work not the sales. If i am asked to be more of a sales person i would not do it. i dont know if stating that i will keep doing my own work the way i want no matter what will reduce interest in investing in me or increase it long term; but i really do not see many options to sustain my career legacy. I may get some temporary side jobs like working for Census, but even if i got a huge increase in income what matters to me is what is created with what i have ultimately.

SCOD social capital has increased overall i believe, which is hard to define since it is not income based. I am close to founding a tristate network for hosting art, music, and writing events; but the design is mostly socially dependent, using properties in WV, MD, and VA. The financial components like ticket sales and payments are totally based on how many people i can get to coordinate together. we currently have several proposals still being formed, for multimedia broadcasting and sharing local events, i can pursue these negotiations without financial losses. ive felt on the verge of something big over the years, but i never know when the tipping point will come because … and this is the hard part to talk about, the complex dynamics of partnerships.

I am proud to ‘beg’ with something of quality to offer in return. When you buy my work, you support many other people; because I collaborate with and buy from other artists and friends. To anyone that thinks I am begging by being honest that I do not earn much, I argue that bragging about how good your work is and saying you have been ‘financially successful’ by taking more than you need is worse than begging because to me that could be considered just as unworthy of support. Getting money from other people is not proof of deserving money, it is simply how people pay their bills. Also I am not just begging because I offer plenty of services and products in various fields. I am simply saying why I could use more income, as opposed to those who do not need more for basic living. I have many jobs, and i do them. I tend to give things away for free and make reasonable deals to work with lower income people.  I apply to better paying jobs, but I do not get them, and when i have had them before i cannot keep them for psychological reasons, one being i cannot stand authoritarian control because i desire to fight back against bosses the same as I would with any willful cruel or ignorant jackass; but when we trade self-respect for money we suppress our resentment which can fester and build to a break-down or illness.

I will not spend time defending myself by arguing against assholes, they are not worth my time. I am too expensive for them because they cannot pay me enough to work for them, and it is easy enough to block them and delete their petty comments. Their attempts to troll me are pathetic when i can shut them down easily. It is amazing that people will ‘friend’ me only to wait for chances to attack, without ever once being kind.  These are the type of people that would tell homeless street musicians to “get a job” too.

If fees are low enough with time i can advertise more without major losses on more websites; in hopes to get at least a few sales. Social reception is usually less than enthusiastic on a whole from audiences on platforms. Amazon is the best example ive had because ive been using it for years, i struggle to get a few sales a year even when i post the links and talk about them etc. I know it is not because my books are not as good as ‘Diary of a Whimpy Kid’ or ‘Captain Underpants’ which are best sellers, it has to do with commercial control of the market at the high levels. I mean sure we could argue whose art or story sucks more, but with enough exposure anti-authoritarian subversive books like ours do well with children and ne’er-do-wellz, which are a large portion of the population.

Ironically most of the people who buy my books are part of the vanishing middle class; not the lowest or the highest earning. There are more lower middle class people so they do buy more books, compared to the few upper middle class people who are interested in my books. I have had people with large incomes talk with me for hours, and i gave them books and they still did not buy any, so spending money has more to do with personalities than wealth; which is why those with less wealth will spend more if they have an income, which creates financial flow and opportunities in an economy.

All of these opinions of observations are reasons why many of us are not satisfied with status-quo commercial politics. We want more leaders like Bernie Sanders and progressives on the right or left who can be held to account by their voters who are also the majority of their campaign financing. We cannot afford allowing corporate sell-outsto further rig our own economy, environment, and country against us.

How to Price Art

Posted in Arts (Design & Performance), Crafts, Illustration, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 31, 2019 by Drogo

SCOD List of factors for pricing Art:

1.   Market previously for similar items or services

2.   Social associations of symbols

3.   Artist’s feelings about the art

4.   Relationship between artist and customer

5.   Customer’s feelings about the art

6.   Quality of craft technique

7.   Quantity of materials

8.   Hours invested

9.   Demand currently

10.  Design spirit (alien influence?)

The best thing about art, is that it needs no justification. If someone asks you why you priced it the way you did, you can simply say “ALIENS” and leave it at that. Most subjects and work that we do can be considered in terms of ‘science’ and ‘art’; the artificial value of any product or service (or anything) is subjective.

Lorax 2: The Return of the Dryods

[based on The Lorax by Dr Seuss, this is fan-fiction]

THE LORAX IS BACK!!!

“We wanted to know what the Lorax would do, we wanted to know what the Lorax knew too!!”  – One of which happens in the LORAX Part TWO!!!

20160613_144542

Once the Lorax vanished from sight,

The Onceler was left in his poisonous blight,

but he gave a seed to a lad

who grew a tree and was glad

He let out a call to proclaim he was proud,

so loud that the Lorax heard it high up on a cloud.

The clarion call was heard by Dryods one and all!

So the little furry fellows came down

Some were red, some were orange, and one was brown.

They told the boy “We are here to protect the last hope!”

With their colorful voices they asked for twigs and rope.

Magic of clover helped get seeds from all over

The people created a garden owned by none,

and protected it for the future of everyone.

A forest grew too, just like new!

The barba-loots came back in their barba-loot suits

and also again came the fish and the birds

all due to actions from a very few words.

The Lorax retired under a hill of trees

and you can visit him there for tea, if you please.

Six States World

Posted in Cartoon Comics, Fictional Characters, Multimedia Communication, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on July 9, 2019 by Drogo

The World of Six States is populated by 6 types of elemental beings with their own state countries: Gas, Fluid, Solid, Fire, Life, and Death. Life leaders have run a unified Kingdom of Partimons for hundreds of years, but peace is being threatened by the terror of Death. Death claims they are not a ‘state of being’, and so deathmon conspire to kill those who consider themselves beings. These stories take place during the Six States War; a time of chaos and changes.

The planet is larger than what is depicted as the ‘6 States World’, and may contain other biospheres or countries involved in their own things, that are not included in the first stories, so there is room for inclusion and expansion.

There are no males or females, only mons.

Partimons are politicians and leaders of state countries. Partimons are often named to represent individual particle elements and their state (example – Oxy Airga).

Fluxors are hybrid combinations of basic beings, or beings in a process of change to another type of being. The longer a being stays in flux, the more social pressure will be put on them to pick a type. Some fluxors stay blended between states as born or altered mutant hybrids and blends.

The 6 State national colors are: yellow (gas), blue (fluid), green (solid), red (fire), white (life), and black (death). Other colors exist in minority, including blends between states (grey, purple, orange, etc), and fluxor hybrids with other colored parts.

Thousands of years ago all 6 states of being were unified into a mass entity known as Univox. Univox grew in power by consuming other worlds, and became omnipotent in the Galaxy. However to maintain complete control of the Galaxy, Univox had to keep consuming others, and this was an unsustainable threat because not all who were consumed were content sacrifices, Universal outside powers demanded more growth, and if growth continued there would be no other beings left to consume. This power problem was called ‘The Great Dilemma’ and a desire to resolve it resulted in Univox hiding the secrets of their power, and dividing into 6 states of being; thus reducing their power impact on the Galaxy. The Six States warred for hundreds of years during a dark age, which greatly reduced their population and area of consumption again.

A prophecy of ‘Infinivox’ calls for reunification of Univox after a final battle, and to follow an exponential growth plan, which would result in infinite universal power.

Captain Marvel and Shazam!

Posted in Cartoon Comics, Fictional Characters, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on April 18, 2019 by Drogo

The history between the DC and Marvel characters named Captain Marvel, began long before those companies formed; and is worth researching. Many conservative male critics thought that the recent Marvel version should not have been female, but that is stupid considering Ms. Marvel has already had several incarnations. Also culture is more than ready for more heroins.

Regarding snobs about Captain Marvel, I think people often forget that culture and politics have always been tied into popular comic books; from Captain America to Superman being an illegal alien with a secret identity, raised by a poor family and his enemy being a rich maniac (Luthor), written by jews using the german ubermench idea with dark hair instead of arian blonde. By studying writers like Larry Hama fans can learn how CIA and social themes drove their plots and characters. Shazam is funny for sure, I like the whole Captain Marvel history from the times before DC and Marvel; it really shows how copyright is constantly challenged because inspiration comes from pre-existing sources, and even fans start pushing the boundaries with public domain. Also the original Ms. Marvel was in this Shazam series version way early on.

Being way too wound up as a nerd to enjoy anything that someone else makes, makes us disappointed with most things because high standards can easily make us snobs. When we feel better than everyone, we stop enjoying simple pleasures or quality dept. Our glass will always be more empty. I think life is worth trying to enjoy, despite all the flaws that we can dwell on. Keep thinking, but dont ever forget to find the things you enjoy!

Incredible Hulk Psychology

Incredible_Hulk_Vol_1_273

This essay is from a SCOD video on the Marvel Hulk comic-books. Is the system working for you? Do you work for the system? Do you have a balance?? Dr. Banner worked within the nuclear science field, and was cursed with the alter-ego of the Hulk after a gamma-bomb test radiation accident. The main over-arching human theme of the ‘System vs Individuals’ originated because the military industrial complex created the Hulk, and Banner uses technology to handle his Hulk problem, but he is always chased by the military as a terrorist because the The Incredible Hulk was very aggressively anarchist libertarian (in effect by savage nature, not due to political ideology) due to his resistance to authority and desire to be left alone. In ‘Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World’s Greatest Comics’Les Daniels addresses the Hulk as an embodiment of cultural fears of radiation and nuclear science. He quotes Jack Kirby: “As long as we’re experimenting with radioactivity, there’s no telling what may happen, or how much our advancements in science may cost us.” Daniels continues, “The Hulk became Marvel’s most disturbing embodiment of the perils inherent in the atomic age.”

The main character core theme for individual psychology is obviously anger (but also fear) as one part of the aggressive/passive dichotomy paradigm; because anger is the main catalyst for his change, and calmness allows the beast to sleep within him again. A third theme might be danger/safety (violence/gentleness), survival regardless of emotions. A fourth theme could be the stoic sadness of living with guilt and responsibility for problems. Humans are animals, but we seek to control our id, ego, and emotions for the sake of society and civilization. The Hulk deals with debates about man and monster, where does one personality end and the other begin??  Oddly enough, his rage doesn’t make him evil or the antagonist in the story. Can he be both a hero and an anti-hero?? Originally the Hulk transformed at night (1962), then randomly. It was not until after about the 30th comic book (1966) with Hulk in it [Tales To Astonish #80], that ANGER became his main catalyst for transformation. Hulk influenced popular culture so much, that the term ‘hulk out’ means to get enraged and rampage. “Don’t make me angry; you won’t like me when I’m angry.” – Dr. Banner (TV show)

Dr. Banner is a scientist dealing with some serious mental issues. As he evolves, so does his monstrous manifestation. The egos of the various incarnations exist within Banner, as Banner exists within them. The metaphor being that our different personality aspects and phases of life exist within us. Who we ‘really are’ does not have to be limited to just one personality, or set of emotional responses. I actually cannot think of a depiction that does not consider them within each-other as they are obviously connected, even if they are also beings in their individual ways.

The Jekyll-Hyde story is not just about literal appearance differences; also about mental disorders and addiction, physical (chemical) and mental bi-polar and border-line… all kinds of things to think about with split-personality concepts (not the diagnosis but the reality of how emotions can be overly intense with many people, making them seem like different people when they experience them).

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an American politician, educator, and political activist. On June 26, 2018, Ocasio-Cortez won the Democratic primary in New York’s 14th congressional district. She fights for civil rights and environmental causes; against corporate greed and pollution. Her campaign funding was door-to-door real neighbors, so she serves the actual population of people, not just rich people.

SCOD Ecovillage Short Story

The woman and man planned and ran their own dream village of fwends.

Twin spirit kindred flames, like mirror twinsies; except one was more fire and one was more water, and both were rooted in earth and speaking signs in aether air.

He would say “isnt it so sister?”, and she would say “yes brother, it is so.” and then she would say “isnt it so brother?” and he would say “yes sister, it is so, and you are also correct about that.” and they would wind the gears, and dust the chairs, and sweep the floors and patch the roofs, and mend the windows, polish the wood, and explore the woods. They sing French songs together that she taught him. They kiss and hugs like good brothers and sisters do, in honor of Hermes and Hathor; and they invite all to do the same, if they do choose.

Trump is a modern Scrooge

Posted in Cartoon Comics, Short Faerie's Tails, Uncategorized on December 26, 2016 by Drogo

Trump is a modern Scrooge (from Dicken’s story ‘Christmas Carol’); however he seems not to have learned the lessons that Scrooge learned by the end of the story. Some people do not learn to be more generous and loving as they age, even when confronted by ‘spirits’. Pain and suffering are not only natural parts of life, but very mysterious the more we study them with science and psychology.

Trump never learned by the end of the 1980s that greed and obsession with physical appearance and material wealth was unethical and immoral; socially and religiously. Trump has continued to abuse women, insult everyone, and make huge profits at the expense of millions of victims of a corrupt Capitalist system. Now made president by the electoral college, this wanna-be-dictator is increasing racist violence around the World, dismantling all the humane departments of government (Education, NPS, EPA, lower-class and middle-class well-fare), and increasing pollution and corruption within our country by a series of ‘executive orders’ and ignorant tweets and propaganda that promotes well-fare for the rich and oppression for the masses. The Tax bill, his actions against Natives, and his increase of War spending are clear enough; besides all his hate talk. There are reasons his approval ratings are lower than all other presidents in recorded history.

Local Authors and Illustrators Dilemma

Posted in Book Reports, Cooperatives / Communities / Networks / Travels, Crafts, Economics, Illustration, Individuals / Members / Monsters / Creative Writing, Organic Development with tags , , , , , , , , , on July 26, 2014 by Drogo

I often wonder why locals are not more interested in supporting local authors and illustrators, even those i have put in my books because I support their belief in supporting local food and history. It is not because they are too poor, because they have enough spending money for other more expensive entertainment like events, shows, internet, drugs, etc… so i was going to send out a survey to understand the lack of market better, but after thinking about it i think the surveys would not do much good.

i think there is just no existing market example; at least none established like a Common Market for local books. So people do not think my books are worth investing in, even when they are well made and even have the reader in the book! Of course thank you to those who have invested and purchased my books!!

Funny thing is i have given away many books for free, and have even published entire books for other authors for free. And people have actually seen the books in person, like at a festival even… still very few sales. Ok there is one local book store just opened last year; ill ask there sometime when i get the courage, but i have asked at libraries and other stores with no success. There are other local books stores for used books or historic books, but you would be surprised how stuck-up most venues are… they already usually have too many books that don’t sell enough they say.

Going door to door worked for my historic book for the town, but organic person to person has not worked for BOG PEEPS strangely… perhaps it is the income difference so they view themselves as lessers or equals; rather than benevolent sponsors…. even though both actually have the money to afford a copy if they believed in the product and it would not hinder their bill paying.

Hopefully a time will come when people view ARTS as a local ‘produce’ worth supporting in weekly common markets. We can make it happen by supporting local artists and authors with actual purchases and financing. Supporting individual artists and writers is not fantasy, it is real and we need to live it.
