Urban vs Rural Living Differences

Living in an Urban City is different than living in the Rural Country, in a few ways. Civilization and Wilderness both have advantages and disadvantages when contrasted with each-other (pros and cons). People that love cities tend to focus on night-life, restaurants, and dependence on technology. People that love the country tend to focus on tranquility, nature, and independence from artifice. Fans of both often talk about their flow within the setting, and desired emotions evoked.

Urban + Rural = Suburban Sprawl – Wilderness

One of the major planning issues has become Suburban Sprawl. Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the first American architects to address the problem of sprawl in his Broadacre City design. Broadacre city was a modern blend of libertarian and futurist urban, industrial, and agricultural aspects important for civic functions.

Summary of an Article on Bullshit Jobs

There is another scholar doing research on a question I have been asking for years.

Why after thousands of years of civilization, with all our modern technology and complex sociology and even despite higher educations, do most of us have less ‘free time’ than ever before? It does seem as though we are slaves to the ‘machine’ of the systems of society.

“Rather than allowing a massive reduction of working hours to free the world’s population to pursue their own projects, pleasures, visions, and ideas, we have seen the ballooning not even so much of the ‘service’ sector as of the administrative sector, up to and including the creation of whole new industries like financial services or telemarketing, or the unprecedented expansion of sectors like corporate law, academic and health administration, human resources, and public relations. And these numbers do not even reflect on all those people whose job is to provide administrative, technical, or security support for these industries, or for that matter the whole host of ancillary industries (dog-washers, all-night pizza deliverymen) that only exist because everyone else is spending so much of their time working in all the other ones. These are what I propose to call ‘bullshit jobs.’ what does it say about our society that it seems to generate an extremely limited demand for talented poet-musicians, but an apparently infinite demand for specialists in corporate law? (Answer: if 1% of the population controls most of the disposable wealth, what we call “the market” reflects what they think is useful or important, not anybody else.) in our society, there seems a general rule that, the more obviously one’s work benefits other people, the less one is likely to be paid for it. Clearly, the system was never consciously designed”; but the way things are does serve the 1%, and a simmering resentment is fostered against anyone whose work has clear and undeniable social value or appeal. “It emerged from almost a century of trial and error. But it is the only explanation for why, despite our technological capacities, we are not all working 3-4 hour days.”

Progression of Aggression

Modern automobiles are a deadly fun convenience for transportation. Yay human civilization, fuck everything else. Roads and vehicles basically say a big FUCK YOU to birds, bees, bugs, plants, animals, and life in general on Planet Earth. Cars and trucks are one of the main killers of life on this planet every day. The truly suicidal thing about the race for bigger and badder killing machines, is that besides murdering billions of deer, possum, skunk, turtles, and other cute critters, we are murdering ourselves too.

TV Shows like ‘Top Gear’ are entertaining, and i certainly have enjoyed watching their stupid antics and testosterone driven points; but there must come a time when we all collectively say “Who the fuck put assholes in charge of running and hosting everything in society?” Even the most ‘hippy’ of the 3 annoying hosts made a statement about alternative cars that made me feel sorry for the state of humanity. What that jerk said may be accurate about hydrogen-fuel-cell electric cars as being the only ‘car of the future’ because they “have all the convenience and horse-power of our current petrol car standards” (or something to that effect) because we have all been pressured to feel that ‘Progress = Aggressive Power’, just as that host was advocating as though the company had given him a bribe.

Progress does not have to mean going faster, moving with more thrust, or being better. Yes often progress should mean being more efficient, breaking records, and all that competitive ‘dog eat dog’ ‘survival of the fittest’ shit. However popular commercial peer pressure is driving the need for road-rage, arrogance, aggression, and pollution as ‘progress’; and to prove that this should not always be our definition of what is ‘good progress’, we need only think about technology that some of us realize we are too stupid to use all the time. For example how many of us say we need to only use nuclear bombs or stronger weapons all the time, since anything less would be ‘going backwards’.

We need to be teaching kids not only that they do not always have to ‘win’ or be ‘winning’ all the time; but sometimes we need to decide to throw the ring into the volcano. To learn how to begin to want to put harmful ideas or technology aside, must start at a young age; otherwise you get tons of middle-aged men having problems figuring this out even during their mid-life crisis with their fucking sports cars. Commercial sports and cars may be fun, but they are both fucking idiotic.

“The Effects of Art and War on the History of Civilization”

Although it is commonly said ‘History is written by the victors,’ that is not the final conclusion of this class.  We will explore how architecture, archeology, art, and war affect the way that we perceive cultures in the past and present.  Art and the liberal arts in general are used to express a zeitgeist which may or may not be in concert with the winners of a military conquest.  This course asks the question “How do these factors contribute to the History of Human Civilization; and should they be supported or funded, and if so then in what ways?”  This course is for students interested in architecture, historic preservation, anthropology, environmental science, art, military history, and the ethics of financing.

Required Texts:   The Art of War, War & Peace, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Declaration of Independence, The US Constitution, and related texts to be chosen from a list during the course

 

Course Requirements:

Grades for this course will be determined in fourths by class attendance, participation, assignments, and tests.  There will be a minimum of 3 projects and 3 tests (including the Final Exam).  The Final Exam will be given at the scheduled time during finals week.

The grading scale for the course will be as follows:

Completed = Pass

Accepted Pending Revisions = (APR) Needs some more work

Incomplete = Does Not Pass inspection, too much missing data or errors

Attendance Policy:

All of the vital information for the tests and the final exam will be gone over in class postings, in-class discussions, and question-and-answer.  Therefore regular attendance and note taking is required for mastering the material.  Legitimate excuses received will be honored for some absences, however unexcused absences will result in grade reduction accordingly (ratio to percent).  The more absences, the greater the grade reduction.

 

Tests and Projects:

Test topics will be taken from lectures on the readings, and question-and-answer class discussions.

The majority of test questions and short essays will be based on the readings as discussed in class.

Projects will include:  art and written essay reports.

Project research and investigation will count towards the overall participation grade.

Final Exam:

A series of long essay questions based on the readings, class discussions, and projects.

In many ways this is a new subject, and students will be participating in groundbreaking research that is cutting-edge and widely debatable due to its controversial nature.

Global Humanity Problem / Solution Summary; After Decades Modern Civilization Conclusions are the Same

These are the same results I found during my Architectural Thesis in 2000. The larger the amount of humans on the planet, makes for less available resources per person over time. Overpopulation makes our impact EXPONENTIAL, for better and for worse. The responsibility of Stewardship is also therefore increasingly harder.

War and Environmental problems become harder to handle, while we at the same time develop better tools and more workers to help pre-existing problems. Civilized SUSTAINABILITY can be seen as a large building; the more you add on to accommodate people, the more you have to maintain, and larger problems are created that may be un-sustainable. Utopia was never perfect, even in the original novel by Sir Thomas More.

My most positive conclusion (besides escapism, nihilism, or negativism) has always been EDUCATION. It is the longest way, but the best answer. High-tech games are only beginning to address the needs of education for the future, but we must develop many more tools.
