The Non-profit and Grant Paradox

Non-profit groups have a grant writing Catch-22 paradox that is a real problem for grass-roots activists. There are several dualities that cause dissonance for fund raising functionality. Income is often very vital to motivate groups of people.

About PAY motivation:

  1. Members need to be active often without pay to advance the cause.
  2. People need to pay bills, and are not motivated to follow-through with difficult missions without pay.

About LEGAL status:

  1. Group needs to be legal to get 501C grants.
  2. Group cannot be legal without members paying fees, and being active enough to fill out the applications for grants, and then carry out the mission functions.


Groups need members who believe in the mission strongly and have the personal will-power and discipline to contribute at least equally, regardless of pay. Trust and dedication to the team is vital. Groups can function on a basic level, without all members trusting all other members; the minimum amounts of trust can be between pairs of friends, that help other members to stay involved.

On Living & Working Together

Living and working together are similar, and sometimes combined. When part of most days are spent doing things with each-other, we should realize it is a partner relationship, and it is very important to evaluate functionality and success whether the goal is happiness or a project. You cannot really understand who people are, unless you have serious lengthy interactions; and if you cannot spend hours with each-other, pushing, pulling, and in silence, then just realize you do not really know them well enough for major partnership decisions. Even when you have lived with another, which is even harder than long distance, there are things about them which will not make sense to you. It is only through meditation on the shared living experiences and communications, comparing and contrasting ideas and results, words and actions, good and bad feelings, can we have a real basis for knowing if who they are works with who you are sustainably enough to live happily together. This is not to say that anyone is perfectly good to themselves or others all the time, but we can only know relative to our own experiences and wisdom. Desire to do something with partners cannot be so selfish it excludes them; we succeed or fail together with group projects.

Facebook has made it clear to me, that text messages (no matter how personal), are not a true substitute for the kind of testing that must be done in person eventually. However, the less challenging your communication is, the less prepared you will be to handle each-other when the hardest tests come. The best indicator that you cannot work together, is if both people harbor more resentment than love consistently. The best indicator that you can live and work together successfully, is if the partners harbor more joy and love, than bitterness consistently. Some people have problems expressing certain emotions, so that should be taken into account, however it will impair communication. If you cannot tell how satisfied a person can be or is, it can cause confusion; same for bipolar mood shifts. This is why natural psychological medication, like moderate doses of organic cannabis, are so important for many people to find balance during stressful times or for severe personality disorders.

Advice, Partners, Cooperation, & Dedication

Regarding Life Long Goals and Dreams…

It is fine to say ‘just do it’ or ‘let’s do it’, and that works fine for simple choices. However, for long term complicated projects, the phrase ‘get ‘er done’ is more easily said than done. It is also true that it can be easier to give advice, than to actually take the same advice. ‘One cannot take one’s own medicine’, as the saying goes. If one were serious about a life long goal, then one would constantly do whatever they could to advance that goal; any chance they got, they would go for it over the years. For partners to invest in a project, they should show commitment by planning to meet for a series of weeks in order to accomplish business tasks: plans, financing, purchases, and contracts for starters. To say you do not have the time to seriously attempt an epic dream, is obviously to not take the dream seriously. In order to achieve difficult goals, large amounts of sacrifice, production, experiences, and resources are needed that are relative to the goal. Major specific investments are needed also, such as committing quality time and effort on the appropriate scale. We can work on our own projects and skills as individuals, but in order to achieve large goals with partners you have to spend many hours working on many issues; over and over again until you arrive at conclusions regarding mutual decisions and principles. If a partner says they are dedicated, but cannot make time for any substantial meetings over the course of several years; it is fair to say they may not actually be dedicated; whether they are conscious of their own failings or not. When such problems occur in a partnership, it is up to at least one of the partners to point out the issues; then if nothing can be done, at least there was an attempt (or attempts) to reconcile. Only individuals can decide for themselves, what they are willing to do to see the project through; and what they are not willing to do. As much as we may want someone else to follow through with what they said they would like to do, we cannot make them do anything; for if they are forced to do something against their will, then all parties will regret it. When people achieve something together because they wanted to do it, then that is the best way. Do not let the ideal of a project, blind you to the flaws of individuals in partners. Many people will not follow through on much, despite what we may see as their potential. People are rarely reliable for anything – this an important flaw in the concept of cooperation. Therefore it is safest to only try to organize short term projects, if you have to include others in your life. If you do not find any reliable partners, not even one, that is ok; it is often best to just do your own thing.

If you do happen to find a reliable partner that shares your dreams, no matter how temporary, good luck going for it and have as much fun as you can.
