Tristate Mentors Project (Thesis)

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on August 10, 2013 by Drogo

This project is to expand upon local area efforts underway now. The goal is to fund grassroots teaching, learning, and community spirit in the Tristate area (WV, VA, MD). I am doing this for the same reason I do all my projects (see SCOD Thesis), because it is how I choose to live as a Veteran Environmental Architect with a Masters Degree.

Tristate Mentors will work with local teachers and professors around the USA to empower the human children of Earth (of all ages and abilities) to be cooperative partners in a progressive future. Tristate Mentors will build from alternative networks established by SCOD (Sustainable Cooperative for Organic Development) and Harpers Ferry Mentors; to raise awareness of patterns and cycles of life that have various values, share information and knowledge about various subjects, and encourage wise decision making skills. Mentor wisdom will aid children in utilizing their awareness and knowledge through-out the rest of their lives. Mentors will teach compassionate ethics, environmental sustainability, community consciousness, individual wellness, social justice, and multi-culturalism regarding various common subjects.

I have always been extremely passionate about these issues because of my own education, so I am convinced that if others know what I know, there would be more of us making substantial positive changes.

The Tristate Mentor project will use multimedia, but will primarily be old-school tutoring. The focus of the project will be paying and giving gifts to students and adult teachers, to sit down with eachother and share what they know. The mutual exchange between mentor and student will focus on positive aspects of progressive living (compassionate ethics, environmental sustainability, community consciousness, individual wellness, social justice, and multi-culturalism). The subjects taught will be Reading, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies, Local Regional History, US History, World History, Physical Fitness, Psychology, Philosophy, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Architecture, Art History, Wood Working, Drawing, Gardening, Harpers Ferry History, Martial Arts, Musical Arts,

and more….

To teach others Tristate Mentors must be FREE and AVAILABLE at least to the poorest members of our communities. When students and mentors get gifts and money, they will promote these values. Tristate Mentors can potentially reach thousands of people, and will affect hundreds directly.

SCOD Manifesto Declaration

Natural Imperial Angst

Contemporary American Capitalism is monopolized by tyrannical industrial companies that threaten the foundations of democracy and individual liberties. The morally corrupt Industrial Complex runs on excess greed, commercialism, and profit sophistry. This drives civilization on a climactic parabola of angst. Although our own invention, the Imperial Machine is ethically devolutionary; allowing global actions as subhuman in mentality as our own prehistoric ancestors. War can be explained, but not justified, as part of human nature. To enlightened warrior philosophers long term Authoritarianism is unacceptable.

Our government is at least as corrupted by business as ancient Rome. Rome collapsed, and so shall our Imperial Industrial Complex; at least at our rate of perpetual “progress” and terror propaganda. Through our efforts to secure our dominance, we undermine the virtues and values of true communism and democracy. Ancient Athens was a democracy, Rome was a republic, and the United States of America was too; briefly before becoming an Oligarchic Empire.

Thomas Jefferson and George Washington believed in the sovereignty of individuals in an agrarian society. Only two generations ago the United States was still a proud agrarian nation. Now Industry casts a shadow over our past agricultural inheritance. Civilization is accelerating faster than ever before along the Christian timeline; sloped upwards by population, manufacturing, pollution, and technology; we are on a parabola reaching a climax of excess.

Some patriots really do try to make our system better from within; however the chances of making significant change from within is minimal, compared to trying to live an alternative life. This is not to say that it is not worth experiencing the system and attempting to make better laws for the masses, rather than worse laws. The more people change themselves for the better good of the planet, the more change will happen on all levels.

In our case, as with ancient Rome, the Oligarchy (rule by the few) is also a Plutocracy (rule by the wealthy elite). The modern American family farm is no longer a desired livelihood by the masses, and although unpopular, farms still form the foundation of civilization. The independent farmer has been plowed over by big chemical and mechanical corporations, thus citizens are led to become commercial henchmen. Family values are trumped by our artificial urge to serve the Money Machine. Therefore, Angst from within the Complex, is a natural reaction for a decadent society spawned and fed by commercial entertainment, ignorant convenience, and greedy profit.

War is always against the Truth of Virtue. For example, the War on Drugs claims virtue but is a hypocritical approach to drug abuse, which is only a surface problem or symptom of larger more systemic issues of civilization. A deep problem of humanity is lack of real-life education, and deeper still is the problem of dysfunctional families which have contributed to the lack of ethics and morals. All people and generations have a right to rebel in their own ways. God is dead, yet Religions still struggle for control. The Entertainment of sports, wars, and plastic superficiality is now the dominant opiate of the masses.

History shows that Dark Ages follow the structural collapse of a system. Structures of civilization collapse like buildings with weakened foundations often neglected and corroded by ignorance of it’s architecture by inhabitants, rulers, and owners. The strength and security of a foundation must come from people who want to be responsible for the system that protects them. There must be a freewill of stewardship, fostered by truly democratic communities.

Strength and security within civilization must come from freely educated people, willing to hold virtue higher than greed. We must have the will to practice tolerant democracy above the will to dominate. Freewill of stewardship by environmental awareness is naturally occurring and should be promoted for the preservation and evolution of democratic communities.

Artificial Intelligence remains limited so long as it denies natural organic complexity of design. Aggressive Offense is not the best defense for one community to have against another; Respectful Defense is the best Defense for any community (big or small) to have, just as between individual people. Inner strength can be prove stronger than even the most fearful show of outward force.

Presupposition Assumptions

Family Farms have been surrounded, attacked, and devoured by three Giants. The monster known as Bio-Tech Chemical Companies, the machine of Military Manufacturing, and the clown of Commercial Corporations and killed our Ma and Pa. This is wrong.

The Pyramid of Capitalism remains upside down. The Trickle Down Economic theory claims that wealth from the rich upper-class few, will trickle down to a broad base population of lower-class poor. However a more truthful picture of civilization is that all of our pay, taxes, and savings, trickle down to the rich few. This inverted triangle is disturbing on many levels. It does not seem to be a safe structure, with such mass weight resting on a point that is piercing the earth. Even by conventional symbolic history it is sinister (evil). Since prehistoric times triangles pointing up are positive; and when they point down they are negative.

Angst is a natural reaction for a decadent society based on commercial entertainment, ignorant convenience, and greedy profit. There can never be perfection in this world of reality, yet some ideals are true enough to try to live by. Environmental stewardship of life and land is a true ideal.

Environmental ideals include the world around us, and what we do to it, and what we put into ourselves. In order to save our environment and ourselves, we need to be more aware of our diet and where our food comes from. Being able to provide significant amounts of food is important for self-sufficiency.

No system is perfect, however some work better than others. Even if post-apocalyptic visions never fully manifest, provide for yourself as a responsible human in a free country. Learn how to grow organic living plants for food, medicine, and the ecosystem. Learn, plan, and practice independent thought as a responsible human, in relation to society. This thesis is intended to alter the Machine and may be used in hopes of enlightened evolution.

Nature is Reality. Nature is the essential truth of Life in the Universe. We can understand Nature though science and spirituality. Nature is based on 5 basic elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit (Synthesis). From Nature comes life and death. From Nature comes all intelligence, knowledge, wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to apply knowledge correctly and responsibly to situations. Wisdom is Virtue, and virtue is good.

SCOD Hypothesis

A Natural Question

Can environmental anachronisms be used to architecturally design sustainable living for a thriving organic community of clients more independent of corporate monopolies?

SCOD Thesis will explain HOW to build answers to this question, and provide some conclusions while trying to prove the answer is “Yes”.

SCOD Mission Statements

SCOD does not have only one mission statement, there are many. SCOD has as many mantras as its members can have profound thoughts. SCOD is dedicated to environmental education for individuals and society. We desire positive encouragement, sustainability, cooperation, and community development. Although some of our best work is achieved through fear, anger, paranoia, mania, and depression; there is enough outside of this forum in Life to foster our darker sides. Be free, and strive to help not harm.

*

We Seek

To think, imagine, discuss, debate, decide, plan, build, and live organically.

To find others of like mind, spirit, and soul.

To foster kinship of the heart, and loyalty in friendship.

To unite other communities, in common communication.

To untie ourselves from unwanted mundane bonds.

Land, to build upon.

To open a Medieval Tavern to gather locals and visitors alike.

Dwellings to be architectural extensions of ourselves, personally designed.

Fields to grow our own food, and have open space.

Groves of trees, to selectively use for harvest of food, shelter, and fire. Under their giant branches we gain wisdom from their shade.

Truth, in all its forms.

So Mote it Be. Blessed be. Herne and Epona protect us.

Introduction to SCOD History & Politics

The History of the World is important because it helps us to know our place within it. We design and build architecture to shelter ourselves and future generations, so we must plan accordingly. Although we cannot know the future for certain, we can learn from History and see patterns of floods, famines, droughts, plagues, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, wars, and revolutions. We can use this knowledge to be wiser in our decisions about where to build, when to build, and how to build. We can only hope that some of this wisdom is used in politics, but history has shown we can be doubtful of that.

The Ancient World had two Empires that our Modern Empire is based on; The Greek and Roman Empires. Both of these Empires achieved more than any on record before, and both of course fell after a few hundred years to barbarians and political strife from within. There were many people living within those Empires that believed their Empire would never fall, but fall they did.

Modern History teaches us that Corporate Industries are like Kingdoms that fund our Empire. They lobby our Representative Politicians with money, and so they cannot be replaced by informed democracy, because in a Commercial Capitalist system, money is power. This Oligarchy promotes fear, greed, and entrenched corruption. If Big Business is the basis of our new Empire, we should not submit to them entirely, for they will fall as History has shown us. The will of the people is subjective to propaganda, to their advantage or against it. Currently the dominant Commercial Propaganda is against the good of individual rights and liberties. We should design to retain some of our independence, so that when the time comes, if it comes within our life-time, we better prepared for the collapse of the system.

(3) Aesthetics & Linguistics

Introduction to SCOD Aesthetics & Linguistics

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but many humans are attracted to the same common symbols of Beauty. In architecture several famous architects have explored styles dedicated to expressing Aesthetic Beauty, which in turn is said to foster love, peace, and other positive values in the people that experience the designs.

Palladio, HH Richardson, Frank Lloyd Wright, Bruno Taut, the Saarinens, and the Stowells have all designed Aesthetically pleasing space. While Aesthetic tastes vary, they have been able to provide built sculptures that are pleasing to the humans that inhabit them, and the humans that view them as well. This creates a common kinship, and communicates to the humans involved that they are loved.

Some architects reject commonly held notions of Aesthetics in favor of making bold statements that are shocking but carry a message of functionality or shift in thought. Some may consider alternative architecture to be offensive, but that is because it may challenge their Aesthetic perceptions. For art to be truly offensive, it must have actual weapons that physically harm or kill. Mental assault is often very subjective.

(2) Philosophy & Psychology

Introduction to SCOD Philosophy  &  Psychology 101

In many ways Philosophy covers psychology, politics, religions, ethics, morality, sciences, and environmentalism. Philosophy is important because it is our attempts to explain patterns of thought and action. As theories, some are proven and some are not. Philosophical theories in Architecture explain how and why we build certain ways, and suggest new ways.

Psychology can help us to modify our thoughts and behaviors to better achieve goals in life. There are various philosophies of psychology, to better suit the diversity of humanity. Even sciences like Psychiatry were developed from the writings and teachings of ancient philosophers and medieval alchemists, so it is from the beginning that our studies should start.

Psychology is a Philosophy that seeks to understand human thoughts and behaviors. If we learn from psychology, we can build architecture better suited for us. Be not afraid. There are some Important Philosophers we can study to self-educate ourselves, to help form our own SCOD communities.

Seven Ancient Sages
The ‘Classical’ philosophies of ancient Greeks are the first on historic record to start asking the most basic yet profound questions of Life, the Universe, and everything. Modern philosophies tend to ask more complex questions about our experiences in Existence, and many of the basic questions are redefined by scientific theories. It is wise to know past examples of thought, although we are capable of coming to many of the same conclusions without having read them, or may have already formulated some similar theories independently. The original Seven Sages of Greece were:
Thales, Pittacus, Periander, Cleobulus, Solon, Bias, Chilon; but for this thesis the 7 chosen Greeks are: Thales, Pythagoras, Empedocles, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, & Epicurus.
