The Future of the Middle Ages

Written in 1997 by Drogo to Pipe-Dream Pub fellowship (edited and digitized in 2019)

Why West Virginia?

The rugged, rocky, rolly hills and blue ridge mountains with verdant valleys are a backdrop for snow, rivers, rain, fog, and dusty heat. Cold snowy winters and hot sweaty summers combine with landscape that has the same climate (more or less) as England. Farmland and coal mines; sturdy, beautiful, and backwards in beautiful country ways: a perfect medieval setting for a dwarven tavern.

Why Harpers Ferry?

While maintaining a hardy mountaineer heart, the spirit of Harpers Ferry has guarded and sustained freedom despite its quaint, hobbiton, touristy appearance. Historic Harpers Ferry has been defined by influential travelers, and thrived in their wake. The guests and visitors act in spiritual freedom immortally, like a chronic hysteresis. As Shirley Dougherty puts it, “History always repeats itself in Harpers Ferry.” Native American sacred land where the Potomac and Shenandoah shed tears of love that ran together between the mountains and formed the rivers. Peter Stevens 1730, Robert Harper 1750, surveyed by George Washington 1797 and Thomas Jefferson for the Federal Armory 1830, John Brown’s Raid to free the slaves 1859, President Clinton and Gore Earth Day 1998 (?) and many other important figures and events are part of our legacy.

Prophecy Proposal 1.  We Try Living Together

Trial By Sword and Stone

It is summer 2001 and I have graduated from SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design). In past summers I worked for my Father and HABS (the Historic American Building Survey) as an architectural draftsman, but this summer I have joined the National Guard, and applied to the NPS (National Park Service) Design Center in Harpers Ferry. Three of my history and design friends have taken advantage of the lucrative job market in the DC area, and are currently renting from my parents for metropolitan commuting. The four of us are in a partnership written by round-table contract, and use the school-house in back for a studio office. We also host Gallery exhibits and shows downstairs with antiques, and sometimes entertain B&B guests. There is a substantial flow of money as we prosper.

Prophecy Proposal 2.  We Decide on the Pub Site Land Location

Trial By Earth

A link is established in 2002 between 4 other partners, making 7 of us in the Pub Fellowship. We prepare for the Pub by sharing expenses and seeking land. Eventually we find the best site and purchase the property. Acquisition of ideal, strategic site land that is agreeable to everyone may prove to be the most difficult task of all. The amount of variables involved may seem overwhelming.

Prophecy Proposal 3.  Investors, Funding, and Financing

The Round Table Trial

It is now July 7th, 2003 and the four of us already in town, meet with our newest 3 members at Jefferson’s Rock. Perched upon the Rock of Ages we announce our time is nigh, calling out their arrival into the valley. The rush of the rivers generates a roaring cacophony that titillates our napes as we raise our heads high to the mountains, and declare our individual rights and strengths. Our proclamations echo through the gap, and fly down-stream towards the Capitol of our Nation; flooding the ears of the mundanes. We shout in unison “One for all, and all for one!!! Tally-ho to the Pipe-dream Pub! Hurrah!! Hooray!!! Vivate!!! Liberty!!!” With 7 investors we now can get enough loans and grants and easements.

Prophecy Proposal 4.  Swear Allegiance Fidelity

The Trial of Camelot

Discussions and blueprints of the Pub follow after savings are spent in addition to other sources of funding for Pub property and materials. We archive written insurances and oaths of fidelity to the financial, material, and spiritual fellowship. The Sacred Seven can never fall so long as is planned for, with good will and reason. No one will unite if there be an unproven doubt in their mind or gut. We are philosopher kings united by the power of moral reason. None shall be untested, and with good fortune, none unspoken. And with all said, none unbroken. If a break arises it shall no doubt crack with at least one, but before a downfall the crack shall be filled by the spirit of the remaining 6. Even if 4 of the 7 fall, 3 is quite a magic number (in and of itself), and cannot be denied despite trials, though it be less than 4. If nightmares dare to cross o’er the river Styx into this world to turn 5 away from 2, the 2 will prove stronger (though they be fewer), because of the intimate nature of our number. But if the reality remains a dream of one, or the 7 be undone, to the deep dark abyss with this paper and the Pipe-dream shared by none. Each of our dreams must be thus defined and communicated through speech, writing, sounds, drawings, models, and bodily gestures as completely as possible, in order to compare how our individual desires for the collective dream correspond.

Prophecy Proposal 5.  Building Construction, Operation, and Sustaining Success

The Quest for the Holy Grail

Construction or restoration of the Tavern will ensue. The vision of Camelot will for the first time, be in sight. The combined knowledge of the Pub Fellowship of philosophers will prove a multifaceted tool of inexhaustible energy. As philosophical knights of the round table, we will support each-other as bees in a hive; our Queen is Wisdom (Sophia). Buzzing with ideas, skills, and events our vision will take shape, as hunters acquire resources and exchange places with guards to defend, direct, and build. The material cards we have saved in our hands, will emerge for this ultimate power play. There is such a joyful vitality of powerful energy to the Pub collective, that none spare time to doubt if the dream was worth it. We dance to our own rhythms while we work, so that even the most mundane tasks feel successful. We follow the verdant path of the Goddess in our productive frolicking and fiddling. Indulging in a labor of mind and body, we manifest an artistic functioning time machine, or vehicle for atmospheric revival and mental transportation. The Pub work is life affirming.

Maps are drawn and schedules made. The property of the Pub is large enough for a Tavern or Inn (a few acres). The Pub site is nestled away in woods, yet strategically accessible near a major interstate intersection within the DC metro area. There is ample parking up front. A long driveway wraps around back to stables of a half-timber two-story structure. There is a blacksmith’s shop and grounds for birds, cats, dogs, and horses. The main door is hard wood with heavy elaborate iron hinges, and a strong knocker handle ring. The door opens onto the ground level (first floor) bar and hearth of the Pub. All of the doors can be barred from the inside, chain-locked, pad-locked, and key-locked. By day the interior is lit by diamond pane windows, and later by a grand fireplace, candles, and chandeliers at night. Primarily a wood paneled hall with swords, shields, and various artifacts and mathoms displayed on walls and relic racks. The bar is adjacent to the fireplace, with a stair leading up between them. Bathrooms are behind the stairs, with a gallery hall for internet connection. Six tables crowd the room and pipe smoke hangs about. A fiddler rests on a stool in the corner, bar-wench Debbie serves ale, and Brynna (celtic female lark) sings before the fire. All forms of alcohol and herb are sold here, without the stress of an elite menu. If any food is sold, it consists of simple soups, breads, and common organic vegetables. The atmosphere is alluring to farmers, hunters, truckers, and bikers; but also to role-players, SCA, history buffs, reenactors, and even your average curious tourist or excited vacationer escaping from the rat-race.

Using the same chimney as the main hall, is the Library for quiet drinking, meditating, and studying. Upstairs is where the owners or bar-keeper lives; private bed-rooms, a study, and guest rooms. The blacksmith lives underground and guards the wine cellar, with dogs. The basement cellar links directly to the stable, bar, and oubliettes. The west wing of the Inn will have a dining hall and more guest rooms, and the east wing will have a kitchen and office. Blessed be, so mote it be.

Liberal – definition

Posted in Politics with tags , , , , , , , , , on September 20, 2013 by Drogo

Liberal – being a liberal means being a kind and generous person, that often gives and accepts freely love or gifts, and prefers to give wisely rather than hoard wastefully; in accordance with the merciful teachings of morality from the Bible. Liberal ethics are based on the Golden Rule “love thy neighbor, and love thy enemy, as thyself”. A liberal thinker is comfortable with the arts because they can see the beauty in all creation.

The differences between liberal and conservative may be more socially emotional at their core than we want to admit; almost the difference between wanting to show public empathy (liberal) and not wanting to show vulnerability in relations to the “other” (conservative). The labels liberal or conservative are more a statement of mental willingness to be connected with a social group, than actual id of beliefs; and very connected to the ability of their personality to exhibit empathy for those outside of their state legal boundaries, social group, or superficial party or label.

The greedy rich based on wealth entitlements are not more deserving of loving support than the middle class teacher or the poor coal miner. A liberal can keep preserved land conservatively for the public, giving it to future generations while keeping it from selfish aggressive greedy individuals. Liberal ideology is linked to egalitarianism.

Liberal libertarians are socially liberal and fiscally conservative.

Liberal log-cabin Republicans are kind “classical conservative” members of a republic.

“Classical Liberals” were not as centrist as conservatives co-opting the term today. Liberals from hundreds of years ago may seem tame by today’s evolved standards of more equal rights; but for their day they were bravely questioning authority. Some questioned using thin veils of satire that got them beheaded (Thomas More, ‘Utopia’), and some used overt rebel violence (Founding Fathers, ‘USA’). Being radical leftists has not stopped some infamous figures from also being hypocrites who also abuse power (‘Socialist’ dictators).

Liberal civil rights democrats are the best type of citizen in a democracy, because they are not only for majority rule voting, but also representation of minorities and all people, as well as other forms of life, and things people care about that do not hurt others.

It is rich corporately bought selfish Democrats and Republicans that are a problem for any democratic republic; and are identified by the evidence of evil and corruption.

No one can be entirely liberal, just as they cannot be entirely conservative in all things; as wise people will seek balance, and humans will have contradictions and complexity.

Seeking Tristate Local Eclectic Band Members

Posted in Arts (Design & Performance), Music Reviews, POB Audio with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 17, 2013 by Drogo

I am hereby searching for musician band members to form a local band of some sort, here in the Tri-State area (Frederick Maryland, Harpers Ferry West Virginia, and Leesburg Virginia). I am more concerned about dedication to collaboration, rather than musical “talent”, since talent is relative. Quality is important, and we must be the arbiters of achieving mutual satisfaction. I am an eclectic musician myself, open to various styles and genres; and am searching for other creative people willing to negotiate musically in order to record and play for fun.

Prospective Band Members :

1.   Must live locally and have means of transportation.

2.   Must have phone or internet means of communication.

3.   Must have at least one musical instrument they can play.

4.   Must be willing to record or play live cooperatively and have fun.

5.   Must be open to almost any style or genre of music or sound.

* NO AUDITIONS

I play keyboard, native american flute, primitive drums, vocals, etc…

Hear some of my past collaborative recordings with SCOD on Soundcloud.

Reason interviewed:  Films

1. Why did you start making your films? :
It started with role-playing games, started making little skits. And then decided why not make a film.

2. Describe your films:
They focus around a self made vampire; the good guys and a government agency always try to take him down.

3. Tell us about your Community in relation to making films and showing films:
As far as the community goes there has been no problem with our filming locations. Our showing of films have only been distributed among the cast, family, and friends. Not to be sold or rented.

4. How important is Film-making in your life?
Well my film making brings together the family and friends. It gives us all something to laugh about. It is a good creative outlet.

5. Do you have any other plans for future “Development” of these or any other goals?
Currently writing a new script. Hoping to have an all original soundtrack so it can be publically shown.

6. Give some advice for anyone wanting to do what you have done:
My advice is if you want to do it, don’t say “I can’t,” just do the best you can and look back at it as a creative fun project. You just might surprise yourself.

Thank you Mr. Hess, Blessed be.

Musician Chris McKinley “Rise of Tides”

Chris McKinley

Band “Rise of Tides”

1. Why did you start “Rise of Tides”:

To make waves, big waves, little waves, all kinds of ripples in space. Though, it was actually another band when I started, called Sidewalk Renegade. The name Rise of Tides came from an old song we wrote called, “Saw You”. The intro lyrics went:

“Improvised discreetly
A coupe disguised keenly
Masquerading as democracy…
I see waves crashing and crushing
I see masses combined as One rushing
To the lands where the sands of time are sold by the dime
Appearing here before my eyes
A rise of tides”

And so that’s the kind of vision that Rise of Tides was born out of, and the way we found the name.

It’s been an ongoing process of co-creation. Initially I was just a shy poet at heart that was fortunate enough to be encouraged to sing and suddenly found in music that most potent form of communication and greatest fulfillment I’d ever experienced, so the rest just fell into place.

2. Tell us a little bit about your band:

It’s really just us and our hearts, so perhaps saying anything’s saying too much when the music itself is the best communication.

We are like minded artists with a shared deep appreciation for the power of music, (art in general)’s capacity to effect change and inspire progression, inside one’s own self and the outside world.

We all have a deep love for the art, are moved and inspired by that vital, most open expression this rich medium grants us. We enjoy music of every variety (that is, honest music made for open-hearted creation’s sake) and find the phenomenon of sounds as music fascinating for when brought together they seem to be able to engender high-level communion, fullest communication, share joy, make sadness beautiful, offer reflection, empathy and personal connection, even revelation in so many emotionally riveting ways.

3. How does your music express progressive ideas?
Rise of Tides supports all progressive movements where Peace is the Way, supporting eco-consciousness, co-creation, self-reflection, and growth through expansion of self.

I would say that there’s a lot that can be read into lyrics-wise, for those interested, though it’s the music the guys in the band create that gives the context.

For me our music simply feels like a natural evolution of rock music with various influences that help us push the boundaries, thus in this way it could be said to be progressive as well (though commercial radio may have confused things a bit over the years). Fortunately we’re no longer limited to radio to explore and find new music to appreciate.

4. What are some of your favorite progressive ideas?
I’ll provide a few quotes that chime with me.

“The true value of a human being is determined primarily by the measure and the sense in which he he has attained to liberation from self.” -Einstein

“To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men,—that is genius.” -Emerson

And Martin Luther King Jr:
“I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values….
True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring….
This call for a world-wide fellowship that lifts neighborly concern beyond one’s tribe, race, class and nation is in reality a call for an all-embracing and unconditional love for all men. This oft misunderstood and misinterpreted concept — so readily dismissed by the Nietzsches of the world as a weak and cowardly force — has now become an absolute necessity for the survival of man. When I speak of love I am not speaking of some sentimental and weak response. I am speaking of that force which all of the great religions have seen as the supreme unifying principle of life. Love is somehow the key that unlocks the door which leads to ultimate reality.”

5. How important is “Organic” design in your life, as opposed to simple mechanical design? For example in the food you eat, buildings you live in, and work you do…

Poetry, music and artistic-activism are my life’s true work. Aside from that I’ve been health conscious as far as what I eat and drink for a large part my life now, buying from organic farmers through Fair-Trade whenever possible. Especially by supporting local farmers by visiting local farmer’s markets.

I support the rising world revolutions for peace and justice, free and open software movements, the KillerCoke campaign, GnosticMedia, TragedyandHope, among many other positive-action groups.

Organic just makes sense. Eco-consciousness allows us work with naturally efficiency that is most conducive to long term enjoyment and survival of this living, Earthen mother-ship. The excess industrialization our living planet suffers can be heavy and distressing, I’ve found it helpful to remember this wonder that has created us as such able stewards and this gives me great hope, understanding that this is all just part of the process. Ever seen Woody Harrelson’s flash-poem? “Thoughts from Within?” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj0GZQdCct8

6. Do you have any other plans for future “Development” of these or any other goals? Advice for others?

Rise of Tides supports Ubuntu/Linux and the free and open software movement and look forward to doing a lot of work in this regard. We are excited to be kicking it off this year with the Ubuntu partnership and RiseofTides.com coming very soon, as well as new tracks from our first official album release!!!
We are presently preparing a couple of new members to tour with us, though very soon you shall be able to find us supporting various righteous, progressive movements, positive campaigns, festivals, benefits and would love suggestions if anyone knows of something they feel Rise of Tides should be involved in.
Advice for others? To live an authentic life. To question everything. To seek Truth and inquire within. Love without condition. Be willing to be wrong in order to know what’s right. Watch Paul Stamets Ted Talks on 6 Ways Mushrooms Can Save the World. Stay young at heart. Always leave room to grow, and don’t eat the yellow snow, unless it’s after a reindeer that looks like he thinks he’s flying and you want to go flying with him, then go for it, but really, that’s at your own risk.

Grand Piano Conversion to Harp-Shelf

Grand Piano Converted into a Harp-Shelf

Hardman, Baby-Grand Piano

Kaplon-Stowell House, Harpers Ferry, WV

The name Hardman dates back to 1842, and was one of the highest quality New York pianos available. Hardman famous features include: spruce soundboard, high quality action, and beautifully crafted cabinetry. Grand pianos come in 2 sizes, Full & Baby; Baby-Grand pianos are not for babies, they are only slightly smaller than a Full-Grand.

This baby-grand piano was purchased by Kip Stowell (RIP), for his mother. Kip’s mother, Helen Stowell, entertained guests and played bridge as well as the piano in Massachusetts. It was purchased ‘used’ in the 1950’s and has been in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia since Kip’s parents passed away in the 1970’s. Kip Stowell (Walton Danforth Stowell I) was mayor of Harpers Ferry, and this piano was last played on his victory election by Harpers Ferry antique dealer, entertainer, and friend of the family, Ken Norton (RIP). Wikipedia has an excellent article titled ‘Walton Danforth Stowell’ for more information.

Nena Stowell played the piano frequently for 30 years. Walton Jr. also played this piano, and even created his own way of writing music from drawing the keys. The family wanted to sell it, for extra cash and to free up some living room. Despite the low price offered publicly for years online, it was impossible to find any potential buyers to sell it locally. The buyer had to have access to a vehicle large enough to fit it safely, movers strong enough to carry it, a place to put it, and a respect for the piano as musical instrument, sculptural object, and historic furnishing. And no haggling. So a new concept was designed for the piano.

Piano features:
* Musically in Fair Condition (untuned & needs some key adjustments)
– After spending an additional $200-$1,500 (estimated) in functional and maintenance work
* Body Structure is in Good Condition, Dark Wood (Cherry or Walnut) Finish

Principles of the Harpers Ferry Art School

1. Everyone is an Artist

2. Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

3. Art is the Result of the Confluence between one’s Self and Others

Even if the idea is only human, it exists outside individual perception of the physical world. Ideas do not exist in the same way that mortals do.” – Doctor Drogo F. Empedocles
